Match Report
Jersey embarked on three successive away fixtures with a first meeting of the season with Camberley Town. It was originally due on December 14th but had to be re-arranged as that was the date of the third round of the F.A. Vase. Camberley Town were lying 17th with a 6-8-12 36-47 record, not having won any of their last nine games, albeit five of them were drawn.
Jersey made five changes, four of them rotational, the fifth being Fraser Barlowreplacing Lorne Bickley. Luke Watson, Joe Kilshaw, Rai Dos Santos and Paul McKay swapped roles with Adam Trotter, Jay Giles, Miguel Carvalho and Karl Hinds as Jersey unusually had a full bench with Kieran Lester the fifth substitute.
The ball was high bouncing on a very bobbly pitch with the game resembling beach football in all but temperature. The latter was provided by the opposition with some cynical tackles that brought down anyone breaking clear. Consequently, most of the action was in midfield with the players having problems controlling the ball.
The only goal of the match arrived ten minutes before half-time when a Dos Santos free kick on the left was headed out as far as Jonny Le Quesne in the right channel. Le Quesne met the ball on the edge of the box and did well to keep his volley down and it went through the mass of defenders and into the bottom right corner past the unsighted Dominic West.
McKay struck a better volley early in the second half but it deflected off a defender for a corner. Beyond the hour West punched out a Dos Santos corner which Le Quesne hooked back in and West dropped the ball under pressure from Luke Campbell who stabbed it goalward only for Kayode Conteh to hook it off the line on to his own post and eventually cleared.
Toby Ritzema from a narrow angle brought a good save out of West diving to his right and from a corner a few minutes later flicked a near post header just wide of the far post. West dropped another corner ten minutes from the end and was happy to see it rebound back to him off Ritzema.
Jersey dominated possession throughout the match but with only a goal in it there was always the possibility of Camberley gaining an equaliser. A turgid match that will not live long in the memory but an important three points gained.
