Match Report

Jersey Bulls 4, Kensington & Ealing Borough 0; Saturday 15th February 2020

With “Storm Dennis” heading across the Atlantic and disrupting the airline schedules it was agreed to bring the kick-off forward by half an hour to enable our opponents to catch an earlier flight home. However local road closures did not help matters and their late arrival cost them nearly half of that intended benefit. Kensington arrived with a new manager and only five of the squad that had faced us in September for the only Combined Counties Division 1 match to thwart the weather today.
Manager Gary Freeman again rang the changes with Jules Gabbiadini, Kieran Queree (both on holiday), Fraser Barlow(injured) and Kamen Nafkha (suspended) all unavailable so bringing up to 21 the number of players used in the three matches played in the past eight days.
The Bulls kicked off kicking in to a strong wind blowing from the Town End but it was Kensington who had the opening chance after eight minutes when skipper Gabiel Chiedozie had a free header from a free kick swung in from the right but Euan Van der Vliet managed to parry it and the follow up was blocked too. Five minutes Ruben Mendes-Pestana played a superbly cushioned header for Sol Solomon to volley home but as the large crowd rose in anticipation of the “goal” Bilal Ourida blocked the attempt with his legs.
After that the game fell away as a spectacle and it was not until eight minutes before half time that a half volley from Karl Hinds roused the attendees again but he had hit it whilst off balance and ball faded away from the left post. But Bulls soon took the lead when a right sided Jay Giles corner was deftly flicked in to the bottom left corner by Kieren Stephens for his first Bulls goal to change the dynamic of the match as Kensington would now need to do more than just defend.
Stephens was also involved in the second goal just before the hour when his pass on the turn on the edge of the box put Solomon free to rifle home. The goal of the game, and a contender for goal of the season, followed four minutes later as Solomon scored his second from a free kick wide left that was brilliantly curled with the aid of the wind in to the top right corner for his seventh goal in the last four matches.
The Bulls continued to create more chances, Hinds put a header over and Solomon missed out on a second successive home hat trick when his “third” was ruled offside but another excellent Giles cross was met by the dominant head of Luke Campbell for Bulls fourth to take his own total for the season in to double figures. Three further stunning strikes in the final ten minutes were narrowly thwarted – substitute Zeljko Martinovic and the influential Adam Trotter both had 30 yarders hit the bar whilst an excellent curler to the top left corner by Hinds was deemed offside to limit the Bulls margin of victory to four, just as it had been in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
