Match Report
Jersey travelled to Kiln Brow to face 6th placed Redhill who were hoping to put an end to a poor run in March. Well placed for a play-off place at the end of February they had only picked up one point in their five subsequent matches. These included four consecutive away defeats after having only lost once on their travels up to that point. The teams had played out a tetchy goalless draw at Springfield in January, only Jersey’s fifth in their short career but two of those had been against Redhill.
Redhill won through three rounds of the F.A. Cup, including two victories over teams from the level above, before going down to Whitehawk. In the F.A. Vase they fell at the first hurdle to newly relegated V.C.D. Athletic whom Jersey beat in the F.A. Cup two seasons ago. Their overall record now stood at 16-4-11 63-40.
Jersey made three changes. Ben Le Rougetel, Ruben Mendes and Miguel Carvalho replacing Kamen Nafkha, Adam Trotter and Fraser Barlow. The last two were on the bench along with Fergus Boyle.
Jersey kicked off attacking the tree lined North End on a sunny (11C) afternoon. The pitch was dry but high bouncing, too high to facilitate much constructive football. Theground was unusually marked with half way flags.
There was an early opportunity for Redhill when a close in volley from Tyrese Sutherland brought an excellent reaction save from Pierce Roche. There were early corners at each end but play was generally scrappy with neither side creating much. Jonny Le Quesne nearly made something out of nothing just after quarter of an hour with a far post volley from a narrow angle which clipped the right post. Miguel Carvalho went on a mazy dribble but losing control at the end of it conceded a foul that warranted a caution.
In added time Le Quesne hit a shot on the turn but only found the Redhill ‘keeper and in the last action of the half Nathan Hogan curled a twenty-yard Redhill free-kick on to the Jersey bar.
The turgid fare did not improve after the interval and midway through it Redhill’s Jack Saunders was unlucky to be cautioned when it appeared that Mendes stood on the ball. From the resultant free-kick Luke Campbell’s header was hooked off the line.
Sutherland continued to be Redhill’s main threat and Roche had to be alert again to push a shot from him around the post.
The game came to life when Saunders received his marching orders for a second caution after he pulled back Lorne Bickley as he broke free with just over ten minutes remaining. Mendes had a shot blocked by Wynne-Roberts, Smith intercepted a dangerous Le Rougetel cross and Campbell had a header pushed over by a leaping Wynne-Roberts but the match petered out to another goalless draw with Redhill.
